Need to transfer data from your old computer
to your new one? Here's how.

First, you are going to want to have your Operating System and drivers installed, updated and configured. Then, install all of your application software one at a time with a re-boot between each one. Always disable your Anti-virus when you install a new piece of software. It will re-enable itself each time you reboot, so remember to disable it again each time you install a new application. (One MAJOR tip: Don't just copy your entire C: drive from one computer to the other. Start with a fresh install of your Operating System [usually done by your computer builder] and application software on your new computer, and then transfer your data only.) You are now ready to transfer all of your data from the old computer to the new one. Here are several ways to transfer your data.

1. Cross-over Cable / Peer-to-Peer Networking

Peer-to-Peer networking connects two computers using only a Cross-over cable and bypassing the need of a router, switch or hub. When purchasing this type of cable, the packaging must indicate that it is a "cross-over cable" for this particular network interface otherwise it's likely a straight through "Patch" cable. Sample links are given below of both CAT5 & CAT6 Cross-over Cables that will work. PROS: Very inexpensive (Cables can be purchased or made from $5-25 depending on the length, etc.); fairly quick and easy when both machines have Windows XP installed. CONS: May require some basic knowledge of networking, especially when connecting between different Operating Systems.
