If you already own a router for your home or business this will most likely be your preferred method of transfer. If you are planning on purchasing a wireless router with your computer you will then be able to set up a network with your existing computer(s) and your new laptop. If you are planning on connecting your laptop to your network using Wireless technology you will need to purchase a Built-in Wireless LAN card at the time you purchase your laptop, or use a PCMCIA Wireless card. Hardwire "Patch" Cables Needed: Patch cables are the type of cables that connect a computer to a network hub, network switch, and network routers. These are the standard network cables you would find at the store, unless labeled as a cross-over cable. You will also need a network hub, switch or router. PROS: Very inexpensive, fast and easy if you are already familiar with networking or plan to network between 2 Windows XP machines. If you are already on a network either at home or at the office this will most likely be your preferred method of transferring data. CONS: Requires some knowledge of how to setup a network; slightly higher cost unless you already are on a network or plan to setup wireless in your home or office upon receiving your laptop.

3. USE an External Drive

With this method you simply purchase a USB or Firewire (or both) capable 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure. The cost is anywhere from $10-30 depending on the features. Be sure to purchase the hard drive enclosure ahead of time so it will arrive before you receive your new laptop. Remove your old 2.5" drive from your previous laptop, install it into the HDD Enclosure and simply plug it in to your new laptop's USB port.
